Portable Electronic Conspicuity

Why Does it Matter?

Many GA pilots operate at low altitudes—below 400 feet—where visibility to other aircraft is limited. Aircraft types like gliders, ultralights, balloons, powered parachutes, and vintage GA planes often cannot install full ADS-B Out systems, leaving them invisible to others.

Meanwhile, under the proposed Part 108 UAS Rule, drones flying Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) would be required to yield to aircraft broadcasting an ADS-B or EC signal. Portable EC provides a cost-effective, private, and immediate solution to this emerging safety gap.

Portable Electronic Conspicuity devices already exist and are widely used Internationally.

What is Portable EC?

Portable Electronic Conspicuity (EC) devices, such as the uAvionix SkyEcho,

are self-contained, battery-powered units that have the following features:

Transmit ADS-B Out:

Make your aircraft visible to nearby aircraft and drones.

Receive Traffic Data:

Display nearby traffic in real-time on your tablet/EFB like ForeFlight.

Cost Effective:

Typically under $1,000.

Anonymous & Voluntary:

Can be used without linking to your tail number and turned on/off at will. It cannot be misused for Landing Fees or other surveillance policing.

Proven, Portable & Easy:

Suction-cup mount, plug-and-play, no permanent installation required. EC has been used in a half dozen countries for years, including the UK, South Africa, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and more.

Safety Benefits for GA Pilots

See & Be Seen: Broadcast your position and receive nearby traffic to avoid mid-air conflicts.

Low-Altitude Protection: Critical for backcountry strips, Ag operations, pattern work, recreational flying, and so much more.

Drone Repellent: Makes your aircraft visible to BVLOS drones equipped with ADS-B In, requiring the UAS to yield to the GA Aircraft.

Accessible to All Aircraft: Extends ADS-B safety benefits to planes not suitable for permanent installation, like non-electric aircraft, gliders, Part 103 Ultralights, Balloons, powered parachutes, and more.

Portable & Anonymous: ADS-B Out devices have long been sought after by pilots wanting to be seen, but not access 91.227 Rule Airspace. You can even take one portable to different aircraft that you fly.

Promote EC Awareness:

Share information with fellow pilots, flight schools, GA clubs, online forums, and online aviation communities.

Urge for the Adoption of EC Devices:

To protect yourself, protect others, and participate in a shared electronic safety network that makes our entire US airspace safer for all.

Bottom Line:

Portable EC enhances ADS-B safety, making “See and Be Seen” accessible to all GA pilots. Whether flying general aviation or uncrewed aircraft, portable EC is an affordable, easy-to-use, and effective tool to increase your situational awareness and reduce collision risk.
